How to setup Hermes agent is the easy part — knowing what to do after install is what actually makes it useful. Most tutorials stop at "run the install command" and leave you wondering what comes next, which is why so many people fail to get value from Hermes despite installing it correctly.

This post is the post-install guide. I'll cover the 70-plus skills Hermes ships with, which models to use for which tasks, the first workflows worth building, and how to scale Hermes from "ran a test" to "real daily tool".

How To Setup Hermes Agent — Quick Refresher

If you haven't installed Hermes yet, the cloud free tier requires pasting a one-line command in terminal, the local Ollama route requires installing Ollama and pulling a model before connecting Hermes, and Max Hermes is the paid hosted option at agent.mminia.io. I cover the install paths in How To Setup Hermes Agent (the install angle), and if you're not technical, Free Claude Code has the no-terminal trick. Now let's talk post-install.

The 70+ Hermes Agent Skills

Hermes ships with over 70 built-in skills, and the most useful ones cover the bulk of real-world workflows.

Web search

Web search lets your agent research topics and pull current data. Essential for anything content or research-related — turn this on first.

Browser automation

Browser automation lets your agent interact with websites by filling forms, scraping pages, and clicking buttons. Useful for sites that don't have APIs you can hit directly.

Terminal CLI

The terminal CLI skill lets your agent run terminal commands. Useful for code tasks, system admin work, and file operations that would otherwise require manual keyboard input.

Memory profiles

Memory profiles let Hermes remember context across sessions, configurable per agent. This is what turns Hermes from a chatbot into something that actually feels like an assistant.

Text-to-speech

Text-to-speech lets your agent speak its responses, which is useful for hands-free workflows or just listening to summaries while doing something else.

File operations

File operations let your agent read, write, and modify files on your local system. Useful for content drafts, code editing, and document workflows. There are 60-plus more skills in the marketplace inside Hermes — start with these and add others as you find specific needs.

Recommended Models By Task

Don't use one model for everything. Match the model to the job and the results improve dramatically.

For chat and short tasks

Use Gemma 4 (local) or any cloud free tier. Fast, light, and plenty for everyday chat.

For agent tasks (web search, browser, tool use)

Use DeepSeek (local) or Kim K2.5 (cloud). Both are designed for agentic workflows specifically and behave better when tools are involved.

For code generation

Use Qwen 3.6. Strongest code output of the small models I've tested.

For sub-agents in multi-agent setups

Use Nvidia Nemotron 3 Nano Omni, which is designed specifically for agentic sub-agent workflows. I cover model picks in detail in Hermes Gemma 4, Hermes DeepSeek, and Kimi K2.6 Agent Swarms.

First Hermes Agent Workflows To Build

After install, build these three workflows in order to layer up your daily value.

Workflow 1 — Daily news summary

The goal is to wake up to a summary of overnight AI news. Setup is web search skill on, memory on, and a daily 7am scheduled task. Hermes searches, summarises, and sends to your Notion or Slack — and your morning starts with signal rather than noise.

Workflow 2 — Content brief generator

The goal is to feed in a keyword and get back a content brief with research attached. Setup is web search skill on, Tavly skill on, and file write skill on. Hermes searches, drafts the brief, and saves it to a file ready for you to expand.

Workflow 3 — Email triage

The goal is for the agent to read your inbox and flag urgent items. Setup is email skill on and memory on. Hermes reads emails, summarises by priority, and drafts replies for you to review. I cover broader content workflows in Claude Code SEO Agent — same pattern, different agent.

Switching Models Quickly

Hermes lets you switch models without restarting, which is a huge advantage for matching model to task. In your config you can have multiple providers configured simultaneously — Ollama (local), DeepSeek free tier (cloud), and OpenRouter (cloud) — and switch between them per agent or per chat. This flexibility is one of Hermes' biggest advantages over single-provider tools, and it's the reason you can run cost-effective workflows that mix free and paid tiers seamlessly.

Connecting Channels

Once Hermes is running locally, connect it to channels to make it answer real messages. Hermes supports WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, and Slack out of the box. Once connected, your agent answers messages on real platforms while you do other work. I cover the channel side in Hermes Open Web UI.

Multi-Agent Setups

Once one Hermes agent is running solidly, you can run multiple. An example team setup might be a Research agent on DeepSeek, a Writer agent on a cloud creative model, and a QA agent on a small fast model. Each agent has its own role and its own model, which is more efficient than forcing one model to do everything. Routing between them is described in Hermes Agent Workspace and Hermes + Agent Swarms.

Common Post-Install Mistakes

Four mistakes I see new Hermes users make repeatedly.

The first is trying to do everything with one model — use different models for different tasks, which is exactly why Hermes supports multiple providers. The second is adding 50 skills on day one — start with 5 to 10 essential skills and add more as you find specific needs. The third is skipping channel integration — the biggest unlock is letting Hermes answer messages on real platforms, so connect at least one channel. The fourth is not setting up scheduled tasks — Hermes' background work is where the time saving compounds, so schedule daily and hourly tasks early.

Daily Reality

What a normal day looks like with Hermes running. At 7am the daily news summary lands in my Slack. At 9am the content brief for today's keyword arrives. Throughout the day Hermes answers Telegram messages on my behalf. At 6pm Hermes summarises the day's emails. Most of this happens entirely in the background — I check in, review the outputs, and edit if anything needs adjusting. The mental load reduction is bigger than the time savings, frankly.

Scaling Up

Once basic Hermes is working, scale up gradually. Add more skills by picking one or two from the marketplace each week. Add another agent that specialises in a different role — for example a research agent versus a writer agent. Add more channels — Telegram first, then Discord, WhatsApp, or Slack. Add scheduled tasks across daily, weekly, and hourly cadences as fits your work. By month three, Hermes is doing genuine work for you in the background and you're operating at a higher capacity than feels normal for a solo operator.

What Hermes Doesn't Do

Be honest about the limitations. Voice interaction is rough at the moment, some niche skills require manual install, and heavy creative tasks still need human judgment. For 80 percent of work, Hermes is enough on its own. For the other 20 percent, augment with humans or other tools rather than forcing Hermes into roles it isn't suited for.

FAQ — Hermes Skills And Workflows

How many Hermes skills should I enable?

Start with 5 to 10 essential ones. More tends to confuse the agent rather than help it.

Can I write custom Hermes skills?

Yes — drop them in the skills folder and restart Hermes.

Will Hermes work without internet?

Yes if you're using local Ollama models. Cloud providers obviously need internet to function.

How many agents can I run simultaneously?

Hardware-dependent. I run four to five daily without issues on a reasonable machine.

Which channel is easiest to set up?

Telegram — it's the most native and reliable channel integration.

Can Hermes write code?

Yes — pair it with Qwen 3.6 for the best results on code-heavy tasks.

What if Hermes hallucinates?

Tighten your system prompt, add fallback rules, and use a stronger model for the task. Hallucination is almost always a prompt or model problem rather than an inherent issue.
