The Setup In 5 Steps

Step 1 — Get Hermes + DeepSeek running.

Covered in my hermes deepseek setup post. 10 minutes.

Step 2 — Create a Telegram bot via BotFather.

Open Telegram, message @BotFather, type /newbot, follow the prompts.

You'll get a bot token. Save it somewhere safe.

Step 3 — Connect Hermes gateway to Telegram.

In your terminal:

Pick Telegram. Paste the bot token. Save.

Privacy On Mobile

Three layers to think about:

1. Telegram itself. Your messages go through Telegram's servers. Telegram is private but not zero-knowledge. Don't dump bank details into your bot.

2. Hermes-DeepSeek. Hermes sends your prompts to DeepSeek's API. DeepSeek is reputable but it's still a third-party API call.

3. Your VPS. Your VPS provider can in theory access disk. Use a reputable provider, encrypt sensitive memory files.

Does it work without internet?

Will my bot get spammed if it's accidentally public?

Possibly — Telegram bots are usually private but if someone gets the bot username, they can message it. Add user allow-list if concerned.
