Meta Muse vs Hermes is Meta's closed, consumer-friendly agent against the open-source agent you own — Muse is free to start and ready in minutes but US-only and locked to Meta's model and cloud, while Hermes Agent runs anywhere, on any model you choose, with your data on your own machine.

I run Hermes Agent every day, so the Hermes side of this page is first-hand.

I have not had a chance to test Muse myself yet. The Muse side comes from what Meta announced at launch, plus hands-on notes from Nate Herk, an AI automation YouTuber who tested it for about a day.

What Meta Muse Is

Meta Muse is Meta's personal AI agent. It launched on 8 September 2026 and was built under chief AI officer Alexandr Wang. Meta's pitch is personal superintelligence: an agent that does the work instead of just chatting about it.

Muse runs on Muse Spark 1.3, which Meta calls its most capable model. Every user gets a Muse Secure VM, a dedicated cloud machine that keeps working after you close the app.

You talk to it in the Muse app or inside WhatsApp. Meta says it can book travel, fill out forms, track prices, lower bills and check out with a one-time card through Link by Stripe. Launch connectors include Gmail, Google Calendar, OpenTable, Facebook, Instagram, Peloton and Plaid.

I cover the full launch in my Meta Muse breakdown.

What Hermes Agent Is

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research. The software is free. You install it on your own machine or server, and you choose which model does the thinking.

Hermes comes with a memory system, soul and memory files, Voice Mode, plugins, and chat gateways like Telegram so you can message your agent from your phone. I pair mine with an Obsidian second brain so it knows my business.

Two commands do a lot of the heavy lifting. The /goal command keeps Hermes working on a target without you babysitting it. The /learn command turns a task into a reusable skill.

If you want to see how I run mine, read my best Hermes setup.

And if you want the step-by-step training, there is a full Hermes Agent course inside the AI Profit Boardroom, where 3,000+ members are building agents right now.

Closed And Easy Vs Open And Yours

Meta Muse is built for people who never want to see a settings file. Nate Herk found it had the nicer, more beginner-friendly interface: one main thread with side chats, an approvals tab, a schedule tab, a customisable feed, and a library for the documents, dashboards and media it makes.

Hermes Agent is the opposite trade. Nothing is hidden and nothing is locked. You can swap the model, add plugins, change how memory works, and move the whole thing to a new server whenever you like.

The cloud computer is a good example. Muse gives you its Secure VM out of the box. Hermes got its own answer on 24 September 2026 as a free update: Hermes Bot Screen, which gives each agent its own cloud desktop with saved logins.

Memory And Soul Files On Both Sides

This is where Meta Muse and Hermes look most alike. Nate Herk found an identity tab in Muse that shows editable soul files, which set the persona, and memory files, which hold what the agent knows about you.

He notes that anyone who has built a Hermes or OpenClaw agent will recognise them straight away.

The difference is where those files live. In Muse they sit in Meta's cloud and you edit them through Meta's app. In Hermes they are files on your own machine, next to a memory system and, in my case, an Obsidian second brain full of my notes.

Muse adds a heartbeat that, per Nate Herk, runs every 30 minutes and checks things like your docs and email. On Hermes, I get always-on work from the /goal command, and /learn is how the agent picks up new skills.

Cost And Model Choice

Meta Muse is cheap to start. At the time of writing, the free tier covers up to 100 million tokens a week. Paid plans are $20 a month for 500 million tokens and $100 a month for 3 billion tokens. Nate Herk ran his whole test on the free tier.

The catch is the model. Muse runs on Muse Spark 1.3 and nothing else.

Hermes Agent costs nothing as software. You pay only for the brain you plug in. I can run Claude through the official subscription plugin, switch to GPT-6 Astra, or use free models through routers like OmniRoute and 9Router.

Nate Herk rates GPT-6 Astra as stronger than Muse Spark, especially for coding. With Muse you cannot act on that. With Hermes you change one setting.

I track how the models stack up on Goldie Bench, and the leader changes often. An agent that lets you swap brains keeps up. An agent tied to one model does not.

Privacy And Control: Meta's Secure VM And Sentinel Vs Your Own Machine

Meta has clearly thought about security for Muse. Each user gets an isolated Secure VM. Meta says a guard agent called Sentinel approves internet access, a credential vault hides your passwords from the agent, and permissions are set app by app.

There is also a forget command, an audit trail of actions, and approvals for sensitive steps. A Confidential VM mode, with full encryption and a key you hold, is planned for late 2026. Meta says there is no advertising and conversations are not shared with its ad systems.

The common concern from reviewers is simple. All of that still asks you to trust Meta with a lot of personal data, and some people are not comfortable with that given the company's history.

Hermes Agent answers the question a different way. It runs on your machine. Your memory files, notes and logins sit on hardware you control.

Two honest caveats. If you plug a cloud model into Hermes, your prompts still go to that model's provider. And you are the security team, so nobody is building a Sentinel for you.

If you do try Muse, my tips are the same ones I gave in my launch video: start small, check permissions app by app, and use approvals.

Availability: US-Only Vs Anywhere

Meta Muse is available in the US only, for adults 18 and over, on iOS, Android and web. Meta says AI glasses support is coming later in 2026.

Hermes Agent has no region lock. It is open-source software, so it runs wherever your machine or server is.

If you are outside the US, that settles the Meta Muse vs Hermes question for now. Hermes is the one you can actually use today.

Who Should Pick Meta Muse And Who Should Pick Hermes

Pick Meta Muse if you are in the US, you are not technical, and you want a personal agent for everyday life: travel, forms, bills, shopping, WhatsApp. Nate Herk says he would recommend Muse to non-technical people, and on the evidence that sounds right.

Pick Hermes Agent if you live outside the US, you want to choose your own model, you care where your data sits, or you are building agents for a business rather than for errands.

Be honest with yourself about the trade-offs. Hermes takes more setup. Open-source projects ship fast and sometimes break, which is why I keep a backup agent ready.

My advice on the setup is simple: ask your AI agent to do it for you.

If you are weighing other agents too, I have compared ChatGPT Dots vs Hermes and Grok Bot vs Hermes Agent. To see how Hermes fits into a full system, start with the Agent OS guide.
