In Hermes vs Copilot, pick GitHub Copilot if your work is code that lives on GitHub, and pick Hermes Agent if you want one open-source agent that runs on your own machine and handles chat, scheduled jobs and business tasks across many apps. Copilot is a coding assistant built into GitHub. Hermes is a general agent you host yourself.

To be clear, "Copilot" on this page means GitHub Copilot: the IDE assistant, Copilot Chat, Copilot CLI and the Copilot cloud agent. It does not mean Microsoft 365 Copilot. Hermes means Hermes Agent from Nous Research, an MIT-licensed project. Hermes Labs (hermes-labs.ai) is a separate company and is not part of this comparison.
Hermes vs Copilot: the short answer
These two tools overlap less than the name match suggests. GitHub describes Copilot as "an AI assistant that helps you write, understand, and ship software." It suggests code as you type, answers questions about a codebase, reviews changes and works on tasks you assign it. Everything points back to GitHub repositories, issues and pull requests.
Hermes Agent is wider. It runs in your terminal, a desktop app, a web app served by your own gateway, and inside chat apps such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal. It can write code, but it can also run cron jobs, remember your preferences and send results to a chat.

What GitHub Copilot does in the Hermes vs Copilot matchup
GitHub's docs split Copilot into assistive features, agentic features, customizations, and outside agents and tools.
- In your IDE. Copilot works in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse and Xcode. You get inline suggestions, Copilot Chat, and agent mode, which decides which files to change, makes the edits and runs commands with your approval.
- Copilot CLI. A terminal agent for Linux, macOS and Windows (PowerShell or WSL). Type copilot to start a session. It has a plan mode, a one-shot mode for scripts, a local sandbox, and a cloud option you can steer from another device.
- Copilot cloud agent. GitHub renamed Copilot coding agent to Copilot cloud agent in April 2026. It researches a repository, plans changes, edits files and runs tests and linters in a cloud environment, then hands you a branch or pull request.
- Copilot on GitHub.com and Mobile. Since 28 October 2026, paid plans get the "Copilot in the cloud" experience, where one session can move between the web, the GitHub Copilot app, VS Code and the CLI.
- Automations. From a repository's Agents tab, Copilot can run a task on a schedule or on repository events, such as triaging issues each week.
Copilot supports MCP servers across the IDE, CLI, app and cloud agent. GitHub notes that the organization policy for MCP is off by default. The cloud agent can also be started from Microsoft Teams, Slack, Linear, Azure Boards and Jira.
One limit matters for small teams: GitHub says Copilot only works with repositories hosted on GitHub. Plans are named Copilot Free, Copilot Student, Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, Copilot Max, Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise. Copilot in the cloud is not part of Copilot Free.

What Hermes Agent does in the Hermes vs Copilot matchup
Hermes Agent is free and open-source under the MIT license. You install it on your own computer or server. The latest release is v0.23.0, "The Hearth Release," published on 5 November 2026.
- Many surfaces, one gateway. v0.23.0 makes one gateway own every conversation, so the CLI, TUI, Desktop, editors, messaging bots and cron all share the same chat instead of running separate copies.
- Your choice of model. Hermes works with many model providers, including local models. See our guide to the best model for Hermes Agent.
- Scheduled jobs. Cron jobs can be written in plain language, pinned to a model and sent to a chat or a file. More in our Hermes Agent cron job guide.
- Memory and skills. Hermes keeps short, curated memory files and loads skills on demand.
- Subagents. The delegate_task tool spawns child agents with their own context and returns only a summary.
- Editor support. Run hermes acp and Hermes works as an ACP server inside editors such as VS Code, Zed and JetBrains, showing chat, tool activity, file diffs and approval prompts.

How Hermes and Copilot work together
The sources show a real link between the two. Hermes can use GitHub Copilot as a model provider. In v0.23.0, Nous Research moved the Copilot providers out of the core and into a github-copilot labs plugin. The Hermes docs say this plugin is "built by Nous Research, but not supported." It offers two providers:
- copilot uses the Copilot API.
- copilot-acp drives the Copilot CLI over ACP.
To set it up, run hermes plugins install github-copilot, then sign in with hermes auth add copilot. Profiles that already used Copilot get the plugin installed for them on update. The docs add that logins from the gh CLI or Copilot CLI are no longer read, so you sign in again through Hermes.
On GitHub's side, Copilot CLI can run as an ACP agent inside third-party tools that support the protocol.
A simple split: Copilot writes and reviews code inside GitHub, and Hermes runs the business jobs around it, such as daily reports to Telegram. If you want help mapping that out, book a free AI strategy session.
Hermes vs Copilot for small businesses: three scenarios
These are illustrations of how each tool fits a job, based on what the docs say each one does.
A web agency with client sites on GitHub
The team keeps every site in GitHub. Copilot fits here. A developer assigns an issue to the Copilot cloud agent, reviews the pull request, and turns on Agent Merge's "Watch and fix" so Copilot works on failed checks or merge conflicts. Hermes could add a weekly summary to the team's Slack.
A local shop owner who does not code
The owner wants a morning message with yesterday's orders and a reminder list. Copilot is built for software work, so it is the wrong tool. Hermes fits better: a cron job runs each morning and sends the result to WhatsApp or Telegram.
A solo founder building an internal tool
The founder codes in VS Code and wants an assistant in the editor plus an agent that runs on a home server. Copilot's agent mode handles the editing. Hermes runs on the server for longer jobs and can call Copilot models through the labs plugin.

Who should pick Hermes or Copilot
Pick GitHub Copilot if your code lives on GitHub, your team works in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse or Xcode, and you want reviews, pull requests and automations tied to your repositories with admin controls.
Pick Hermes Agent if you want an open-source agent you control, you want to choose any model, and your work goes beyond code into chat, reminders, research and scheduled jobs.
Use both if you write software and also run a business around it. Copilot covers the code. Hermes covers the rest, and the labs plugin lets Hermes reach Copilot models.

Hermes vs Copilot FAQ
Is Hermes a free alternative to GitHub Copilot?
Hermes Agent is free and open-source under MIT. You still pay for whatever model provider you connect, unless you run a local model. It is not a drop-in copy of Copilot. The Hermes docs describe editor support as chat, tool activity and file diffs through ACP, while Copilot also offers inline suggestions as you type.
Can Hermes use my GitHub Copilot plan?
Yes, through the github-copilot labs plugin from Nous Research. Install it with hermes plugins install github-copilot and sign in with hermes auth add copilot. The docs note the plugin is not supported.
Does Copilot work outside GitHub?
Copilot runs in many editors and the terminal, but GitHub says Copilot only works with repositories hosted on GitHub. Hermes works with any local folder.
Is this about Microsoft 365 Copilot?
No. This page covers GitHub Copilot, the coding assistant. Microsoft 365 Copilot is a different product.
