Most Startnet OS reviews start with a spelling problem. People type "Startnet OS", but the project is actually called StarNet, built by Andrew Sims (androoAGI). So this page answers the question behind the search: is StarNet really an operating system for AI agents, or just a fun app? I will score it category by category, compare it with Herald OS and my own Agent OS, and give you a straight verdict.

Startnet OS or StarNet: same thing

There is no separate product called Startnet OS. When people search that, they mean StarNet. Per its README, StarNet is "a living pixel-art station where real AI agents do real work." It is a local-first desktop agent harness. The code is MIT licensed, though the name and art are not licensed for forks.

That spelling mix-up matters for one reason. Per the README, many forks copy the StarNet description. If you search the wrong name and click the wrong repo, you could install a copy. Install from androoAGI only.

If you want to learn agent setups like this properly, the AI Profit Boardroom has agent courses, daily tutorials and weekly live coaching for $69/mo.

What makes something an "agent OS"?

A normal operating system controls what programs can do, where files go and when things run. An agent OS does the same job for AI agents. In plain terms, it needs to handle five things:

  1. Where agents work (workspaces or teams).
  2. What they are allowed to do (permissions).
  3. Who does the work (agents and specialists you can call in).
  4. When work runs (scheduling, even while you sleep).
  5. What it costs and what happened (logs, spend and budgets).

So the real question is whether StarNet covers those five. Here is how its pieces map, all per the README.

The station as the control layer

In StarNet, the station is the whole system. Everything you control lives inside it.

On top of that, you get MCP connectors, chat connectors for Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal and Matrix, and voice. Models come from an OpenRouter key, Anthropic, OpenAI or Google sign-in, or free local models with Ollama. Keys stay in your OS keychain. It can also import Hermes and OpenClaw agents.

On paper, that ticks all five boxes. So yes, StarNet is built like an agent OS. The question is how well it works today.

Startnet OS Reviews: my scorecard

These scores are my view from setting it up and using it. They are not lab tests. They are how it felt to me, scored honestly.

CategoryScore out of 5Why
Setup5I set up an agent in one or two clicks after signing in with Grok
Interface5The smoothest office-style agent UI I have tried
Permissions model4Rooms and objects make capability grants visible, which is rare
Scheduling4Night Shift covers cron jobs inside the station
Cost tracking4Spend and budget ledgers are built in
Speed3I noticed a slight delay on chat sends
Platform support3Windows and macOS installers, no public Linux build
Maturity2Early release, v0.13.5, about 80 open issues on GitHub
Practical use today2Fun, but I do not see a massive amount of practical use cases yet

My one-line review from the video still sums it up: "I don't think there's a massive amount of practical use cases for this, but it's fun." I also called it a much more fun version of Paperclip. The levels, quests and crew recruiting make it feel like a game while the agents do real work.

Where StarNet falls short as an OS

Being honest, here is what stops StarNet from being a full operating system for your business today:

None of that is unusual for a young open-source project. It just means you should treat StarNet as a place to learn and experiment, not as the system that runs your client work.

Which model you plug into any agent OS matters as much as the OS itself. My Goldie Bench results show which models hold up on real tasks.

The verdict

Is StarNet an operating system? In design, yes. The station really is a control layer: rooms for workspaces, objects for permissions, hallways for handoffs, crew for agents, Night Shift for scheduling and ledgers for spend. That is a smart, visual way to run agents.

In practice, it is an early OS. Setup and interface are excellent. Maturity and day-to-day usefulness are not there yet. My score works out at roughly 3.6 out of 5 across the nine categories above.

FAQ

Is Startnet OS a real product?

No. "Startnet OS" is a common misspelling. The project is StarNet by androoAGI. Install it from androoAGI only, since many forks copy the description.

Is StarNet a true operating system?

Not in the Windows or macOS sense. It is a desktop app that acts as an operating system for AI agents, with rooms, permissions, crew, Night Shift scheduling and spend ledgers.

Is StarNet better than Herald OS?

They do different jobs. StarNet is a visual station for agent teams on Windows and macOS. Herald OS puts Hermes Agent at the centre of your computer, on Apple silicon Macs and Linux. Both are early.

Can StarNet run on free models?

Yes. Per the README, you can run free local models with Ollama, or use an OpenRouter key or an Anthropic, OpenAI or Google sign-in. Need a plan for using AI to grow your rankings? Book your free GEO strategy session.
