How to Learn AI Agents for Free: The $0 Stack
An AI agent is a model plus tools, memory and instructions that can take actions toward a goal, like browsing, running commands and writing files. So to learn agents, you need four things: the agent software, a model to power it, something to teach you, and people to help. Here's the free version of each:
| Piece | Free option | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Agent software | Hermes Agent, free and open source | You install and set it up yourself |
| Model (cloud) | Nous Portal free tier and free model catalog | Which free models are available changes over time |
| Model (local) | Local models through Ollama | Only works well if your computer can handle it |
| Course | Hugging Face Agents Course | Self-paced, so you need the discipline to finish |
| Course | DeepLearning.AI short courses | Many are free to watch on their platform, not all |
| Tutorials | Julian Goldie SEO on YouTube | Daily videos, so you pick what's relevant to you |
| Community | AI Money Lab | No certificate |
That's everything. No credit card required for any of it.
Later on, when you want more structure than free content gives you, the AI Profit Boardroom is the paid upgrade, with full courses and a beginner-to-expert roadmap. But you don't need it to start, and you can go a long way on the free stack alone.
Free agent software
Hermes Agent is free and open source. It's what I'd start with. The official Hermes Agent docs are free too, and they're the best reference for how it works.
Free models
Your agent needs a model to think with. The Nous Portal has a free tier and a free catalog of models. Models like MissingNo, Step and Laguna have been on it, but availability changes, so check what's there when you sign up. I tested one of them in my Hermes MissingNo guide.
If you have a strong enough computer, you can also run local models with Ollama. They're free to run, but older or lighter machines will struggle.
Free courses
The Hugging Face Agents Course is a free, self-paced course on building AI agents, and it offers a certificate of completion for finishing the assignments. DeepLearning.AI has short video courses on AI agents with partners like LangChain and CrewAI, and many are free to watch on their platform. I compared these in my roundup of the best free AI agent course options.
Free community
Courses teach you. Communities unstick you. The AI Money Lab is free and comes with a course and 1,000 AI agents you can use: join the FREE AI Course + Community + 1,000 AI Agents here.

Step by Step: Your First Free AI Agent
Here's the path I'd follow if I had zero budget and wanted a working agent this week:
- Learn the basics. Spend a day understanding what agents, tools, memory and skills are. A couple of short free videos or the first part of the Hugging Face course is enough.
- Install Hermes Agent. It's free and open source. Follow the official docs.
- Connect a free model. Sign up for the Nous Portal free tier and pick a free model, or run a local model with Ollama if your machine can handle it.
- Give it one small real job. Something you'd actually do anyway. Summarise a document. Rename a folder of files. Research a topic and write notes.
- Save it as a skill. When a job works, save it so the agent can do it again on command.
- Add one tool or a schedule. Once you're comfortable, add an MCP tool or put a task on a timer.
- Ask for help when you're stuck. Post your question in a community instead of giving up.
One tip that saves hours: let your agent set things up for you. Instead of hand-editing config files, paste a prompt like "Help me connect a free model from the Nous Portal" and let the agent do the work. Learn by building, one small task at a time.

What "Free" Actually Costs You
Free means no money. It doesn't mean no cost. Here's what you pay instead:
Time
Free resources are scattered. You'll spend time working out which video, which doc and which course covers what you need. Nobody hands you the order to learn things in. That's the biggest cost of the free route.
Rate limits
Free model tiers usually limit how much you can use them. That's fine for learning and small jobs. It gets frustrating when you start running bigger tasks or scheduling things to run every day.
Model quality
Free models are good enough to learn with, but they're not always as strong as the best paid ones. Some free models handle agent tasks well, others make more mistakes on long, multi-step jobs. If you want to see how models compare on real agent work, check Goldie Bench.
Your computer
Running local models through Ollama is free, but only if your hardware is up to it. If your laptop is slow, cloud free tiers are usually the better choice.
None of these are reasons not to start free. They are just the trade-offs. For learning, free is more than enough, and most beginners will not hit these limits for weeks.
Staying Free vs Upgrading
You can stay free for a long time. Lots of people learn the fundamentals, build their first few agents and save their first skills without spending anything.
Stay free if:
- You're still learning what agents can do.
- Your tasks are small and the free model limits don't bother you.
- You're happy piecing together your own learning path from videos, docs and the free community.
Think about upgrading when:
- You keep hitting rate limits on tasks that matter.
- You want a clear roadmap instead of hunting for the next lesson.
- You want live help, not just answers from a forum.
- You want to build a full system of agents for your business.
That full system is what my Agent OS guide covers. Agent OS is my agentic operating system, with Hermes and other agents running with memory, skills, tools, missions and a dashboard.
When you hit that point, the AI Profit Boardroom is the paid upgrade. It has full courses on Hermes Agent, Claude Code and building an agentic operating system, the Agent OS zip, daily updates and 4 live coaching calls a week. Until then, the free community is where to be: grab the FREE AI Course + Community + 1,000 AI Agents.

FAQ
Can I really learn AI agents for free?
Yes. Hermes Agent is free and open source, the Nous Portal has a free tier of models, Ollama runs local models for free, and there are free courses from Hugging Face, DeepLearning.AI and YouTube. You can learn the whole foundation without paying anything.
What's the best free AI agent course?
The Hugging Face Agents Course is a strong free pick if you want a structured, self-paced course with a certificate of completion for finishing the assignments. If you want a free course plus a community and ready-made agents, the AI Money Lab gives you that, though it has no certificate.
Do free models work well enough?
For learning, yes. Free models handle small, simple agent jobs fine. On long, multi-step tasks some free models make more mistakes than the best paid ones, and free tiers have rate limits. Which free models are available also changes over time.
Do I need a powerful computer to learn AI agents for free?
No. You only need a powerful computer if you want to run local models with Ollama. Otherwise, use a free cloud model from the Nous Portal and any normal computer will do.
That's how to learn AI agents for free: free software, free models, free courses and a free community, one small build at a time.
