What "high PR" actually means in 2026
PR stands for PageRank, the link-based score Google used to show publicly in its toolbar. Google confirmed to Search Engine Land in March 2016 that it was removing Toolbar PageRank, and the public scores went dark a few weeks later. Google still uses PageRank inside its ranking systems. You just can't see it anymore.
So when someone sells you "high PR links" today, they don't mean PageRank. Nobody outside Google can measure it. They mean one of three things:
- Domain Rating (DR). Ahrefs says DR shows the strength of a website's backlink profile compared to other sites in its database, on a 0 to 100 scale. It's a relative metric.
- Domain Authority (DA). Moz's 1 to 100 score that predicts how likely a site is to rank. Moz itself says Domain Authority is not a Google ranking factor.
- Real traffic. Whether the site actually ranks for keywords and gets visitors from Google. This is the one that matters most.
DR and DA are useful filters. Neither one tells you if anyone actually reads the site.
What a real high PR link looks like
Here's my checklist for a genuinely high authority link:
- The site ranks and gets traffic. Check its organic traffic trend. Flat at zero or crashing is a no.
- It's relevant to you. A law firm wants links from legal, insurance and business sites. A random DR 80 travel blog won't help much.
- The link sits in the content. In the body of a real article, in context, not in a footer or a sidebar. That's the whole idea behind contextual link building. I covered it in Contextual Link Building: How I Increased My SEO Traffic By 195% In 1 Month.
- A real editor approved it. The site has real authors, a clear topic and standards for what it publishes.
- The anchor text looks natural. Brand names, URLs and descriptive phrases, not the same exact-match keyword on every link.

Red flags: inflated DR, link farms and PBNs
The "high PR" label gets abused a lot. Watch out for these:
- Inflated DR. DR can be pumped up fast with junk links. In I Increased My Domain Rating to DR70 in 72 Hours I debunk the idea that a higher DR automatically means better SEO. If a site has DR 70 and almost no organic traffic, that's your warning sign.
- Link farms. Sites where every post links out to someone different, on every topic under the sun, with no audience.
- PBNs. Private blog networks built only to pass links. Google's spam policies define link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate search rankings, and that's exactly what a PBN is for.
