In the hermes vs n8n choice, use n8n for fixed, repeatable processes you can draw as connected steps, and use Hermes Agent from Nous Research when you want an AI agent that works out the steps itself, remembers context and talks to you through chat apps. They overlap less than it looks, and Hermes can now drive n8n workflows directly.

n8n is a workflow automation platform built around a visual canvas of nodes. Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent under the MIT licence that you run yourself, with skills, scheduled jobs, webhooks and a messaging gateway. One gives you a predictable pipeline. The other gives you an assistant that adapts.

What Hermes Agent is in the Hermes vs n8n comparison

Hermes Agent is built by Nous Research. Its GitHub repository carries the MIT licence. The latest release is v0.22.7, published on 3 November 2026 as a patch roll-up for the CLI, installers, the Microsoft Store app, Docker and Hermes Cloud.

You talk to Hermes in a desktop app, a terminal, or through its messaging gateway. The Hermes docs list Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Email, Home Assistant and Teams among the supported platforms.

For repeat work, Hermes has a few tools that matter here:

What n8n is in the Hermes vs n8n comparison

n8n describes itself on GitHub as "The Platform for AI Agents and Workflow Automation." In n8n's glossary, a workflow is a collection of nodes that starts when a trigger fires, then runs node by node, with branches, merges and loops.

n8n lists more than 1,500 integrations. It also lets you write JavaScript or Python when you need custom logic. The Schedule Trigger works like Unix cron, and the Webhook node starts a workflow when another service sends data.

n8n has AI built in. The AI Agent node connects a chat model to tools and, in n8n's words, "decides which tools to call." A separate Agents feature is in Preview, and n8n's docs suggest it "when work is too open-ended for a fixed workflow."

You can use n8n Cloud or self-host. Self-hosted n8n without a licence key runs as the free Community edition. The licence is fair-code: the Sustainable Use License lets you use n8n for your own internal business purposes. That differs from Hermes's MIT licence, which is a standard open-source licence. Our list of free n8n workflows will get you building quickly.

When a fixed n8n workflow beats Hermes

Choose a workflow when the process has a clear shape. A new order comes in, a row gets added, an email goes out. There is nothing for an AI to decide, and adding a model only adds cost and variation.

To be fair to Hermes, it has a middle ground too. Its cron "no-agent mode" runs a script on a schedule with zero LLM involvement. That covers simple timed jobs, but you write the script yourself, and there's no visual canvas.

New to building flows? A strong n8n community helps when you get stuck on nodes and credentials.

When Hermes beats an n8n workflow

Choose an agent when every run is different. Think of answering a customer question that needs three lookups, or researching a topic and drafting a brief. You can't draw every branch ahead of time, and you don't need to.

The trade-off is variation. An agent may solve the same task two ways on two days. Hermes puts dangerous commands behind an approval step, and you should also keep sending and deleting under review.

Using Hermes and n8n together

This pairing has the clearest documented bridge of any agent we cover.

Hermes runs your n8n workflows. The Hermes MCP catalog has an n8n-official entry. It connects to n8n Cloud or a self-hosted instance over HTTP with browser sign-in, with no bridge and no n8n API key. An n8n admin enables Instance-level MCP, you copy the Server URL, and you install the entry in Hermes. The Hermes docs note that n8n controls which workflows are exposed, and some tools can change or run workflows. Our Hermes Agent MCP server guide covers MCP setup in general.

n8n wakes Hermes. An n8n workflow can POST to a Hermes webhook route with its HTTP Request node. A route can even fire an existing Hermes cron job, so the job's skills and delivery settings apply.

Hermes reports back to n8n. Hermes outbound webhooks send signed JSON when events happen, such as a session ending. Point one at an n8n Webhook node and n8n can log or route the result.

We walk through how we wire agents into a full system in our Agent OS guide.

Small-business scenarios for Hermes and n8n

These are illustrations of fit, not results from a real business.

A bookkeeping firm with client requests

Monthly report reminders follow the same steps, so they suit an n8n schedule. Client questions arriving on WhatsApp vary, which suits Hermes through its messaging gateway, with replies held for approval.

A trades business handling quotes

A quote form can hit an n8n webhook that saves the job and alerts the owner. Hermes could then call a separate n8n workflow through MCP to pull past jobs and draft a quote for review.

A content team publishing weekly

A Hermes cron job could research topics and draft outlines with saved writing skills. When a draft is approved, an outbound webhook can trigger an n8n workflow that formats and schedules the post.

Hermes vs n8n: who should pick which

Pick n8n if your processes are stable and you want every run to look the same. It also fits if you value a visual canvas your team can read, or want a big template library. Check the Sustainable Use License if you plan to offer n8n to your own customers.

Pick Hermes if you want an agent you can message from your phone, that handles open-ended tasks and runs on hardware you control under an MIT licence. Be ready to manage config, models and approvals yourself.

Use both if you want the best of each. Hermes's official n8n MCP entry makes it easy to keep tested workflows in n8n and let the agent call them. Weighing other agents too? Compare Grok Bot vs Hermes, read Grok Bot vs n8n, or check model results in Goldie Bench.

Hermes vs n8n FAQ

Can Hermes Agent replace n8n?

For open-ended tasks, often yes. For fixed, high-volume pipelines, a visual n8n workflow is easier to inspect and hand over.

How do I connect Hermes to n8n?

Enable Instance-level MCP in n8n, copy the Server URL ending in mcp-server/http, then install the n8n-official entry from the Hermes MCP catalog and complete the browser sign-in.

Is n8n open source like Hermes?

Not in the same way. Hermes uses the MIT licence. n8n is fair-code under the Sustainable Use License: the source is visible and self-hostable, with limits on commercial use outside your own business.

Does n8n have its own AI agents?

Yes. The AI Agent node runs an agent inside a workflow, and n8n's standalone Agents feature is in Preview. Hermes is an agent first, with messaging, memory and skills at its core.
