In Hermes vs Gemini Spark, the short answer is this: pick Hermes Agent if you want a free, open-source agent you host yourself with any model, and pick Gemini Spark if you live in Gmail, Docs and the rest of Google Workspace and want a cloud agent that keeps working while your laptop is closed. One thing to know first: Google's own help center now says Spark has been renamed "Task" inside the Gemini app.

Hermes Agent is an MIT-licensed agent from Nous Research, and its latest release is v0.23.0, published on 5 Nov 2026. Gemini Spark was announced by Google on 19 May 2026 at I/O as "a 24/7 personal AI agent". This page compares them fairly, using only Nous Research's and Google's own pages.

What Hermes is, in Hermes vs Gemini Spark
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent under the MIT license. You install it on your own computer or server and connect the model provider you want, or run a local model. In v0.23.0, each machine runs one gateway that owns every conversation, so the CLI, TUI, Desktop app, editors, messaging bots and cron jobs all share the same chats. The release also added a Webapp that serves the Desktop workspace from your own gateway, off by default.
Hermes works through plugins, skills and tools, and the release notes say the plugin catalog passed 1,050 entries. It schedules jobs, delegates work to subagents, asks for approval before risky commands, and can snapshot files with checkpoints. New in v0.23.0 is Hermes rewind, for going back to an earlier prompt and editing or forking from it.
Hermes comes from Nous Research. Hermes Labs is a separate company.
What Gemini Spark is, in Hermes vs Gemini Spark
Google's I/O post describes Spark as an agent that turns Gemini "from an assistant that can answer your questions into an active partner that does real work on your behalf". Google says Spark ran on Gemini 3.5 with the Antigravity harness, is integrated with Workspace tools like Gmail, Docs and Slides, and keeps working in the background because it is a cloud-based agent.
Google listed three main jobs: recurring tasks or triggers, skills you teach it, and complete workflows such as turning meeting notes into a Google Doc and a draft email. Google says Spark operates under your direction: you choose whether to turn it on and which apps it connects to, and it is designed to ask first before high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails.
Since launch, Google has shipped several updates:
- 30 Jun 2026: Spark came to the Gemini app for macOS in Beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, starting in the US. Google says it only reaches local files you give it permission to use. The same update added Google Tasks, Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals, plus custom MCP support and real-time topic tracking.
- 13 Aug 2026: Google said Spark moved to Gemini 3.7 Flash and was available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in over 160 countries.
- Now: Google's help center says Spark was renamed Task, found in the Chat and Task toggle next to the prompt box, with existing tasks and schedules kept in the sidebar. It needs a personal Google Account, an age of 18 or over and a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, and is not available in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK.

Where Hermes wins in Hermes vs Gemini Spark
- You own it. Hermes is MIT-licensed code you can run anywhere, including places Google's agent is not offered, such as the UK and the EEA.
- Any model. You are not tied to one model family, and you can run local models for private data.
- Work accounts. Google's help center says tasks don't work with work or school Google Accounts for now. Hermes has no such rule.
- Developer control. Approvals, checkpoints and rollback, rewind, spend limits on paid tools and locked skills let you set tight limits on what it does.
The trade-off is setup and upkeep. Start with the best Hermes Agent setup guide if you go this way.
Where Gemini Spark wins in Hermes vs Gemini Spark
- Workspace built in. Google lists actions across Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Keep and Tasks with no plugins to install.
- Always on in the cloud. Google says it keeps working when your laptop is closed or your phone is locked.
- No install. It lives in the Gemini app you may already use.
- Consumer apps. Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals connect directly, per Google.
The trade-off is reach. It depends on your country, account type and Google AI plan, and you work with Google's models only.
Hermes vs Gemini Spark for small business: three scenarios
These are illustrations of fit, not test results.
A US bakery owner who runs everything in Gmail
He wants supplier emails summarised each morning and a reorder list kept in Sheets. If he has a personal Google Account and a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, Gemini Spark (Task) plugs straight into those apps with no setup.
A UK marketing agency
Google's help center lists the UK as a region where tasks are not available, and the team uses Google Workspace work accounts. Hermes is the practical route here, running on the agency's own machine with the model it prefers.
A bookkeeper with sensitive client files
If files must stay on hardware the business controls, Hermes with a local model keeps the whole loop in-house. Spark on Mac can work with local files you allow, but the agent itself is a Google cloud service.

Hermes vs Gemini Spark: who should pick which
Pick Hermes Agent if you want an open-source agent you control, you need it outside Google's supported regions or on work accounts, you want to choose your own models, or you want the agent in your terminal, editor and chat apps.
Pick Gemini Spark (Task) if your business runs on a personal Google Account and Google Workspace apps, you are in a supported country, you already pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra, and you want an agent that works in the cloud with no setup.

Hermes vs Gemini Spark FAQ
Is Gemini Spark still called Spark?
Google's help center says Spark was renamed Task after its beta, because users kept asking Gemini to finish "tasks". You find it in the Chat and Task toggle next to the prompt box. Some Google pages still use the Spark name.
Is Hermes Agent free?
Yes. It is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay only for the model provider you choose, and local models cost nothing to run.
Can Gemini Spark run on my own computer?
Partly. Google says the Mac app lets it work with local files you give it permission to use, and it can drive your local Chrome. The agent itself is a cloud service from Google.
Which one is safer for risky actions?
Both ask first. Google says Spark asks before high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails. Hermes shows approval prompts before risky commands, and v0.23.0 added "No, and tell Hermes what to do instead".
