Yes, Grok Bot Linux support works in two ways: xAI ships a Linux desktop app for x64 and Arm64, and every Bot already does its work on a cloud computer that runs Linux. So "grok bot linux" means two different things. One is the app on your machine. The other is the machine your Bots live on.

Grok Bot Linux: the short answer
xAI's Get Started guide says the desktop app runs on macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows (x64 and Arm64) and Linux (x64 and Arm64). The deployment guide lists three Linux formats: .deb, .rpm and AppImage.
The app is a client. You chat, review work and approve actions in it. The real work happens on a hosted computer in the cloud. xAI's deployment docs say that hosted computer "runs Linux in the cloud". So even if you use the Mac app or the phone app, your Bots are working on Linux.

Install Grok Bot on Linux: deb, rpm or AppImage
You get the installer from the Grok Bot page of the dashboard, from x.ai/bot, or from the download page. Then pick a format.
- .deb for Debian and Ubuntu style systems.
- .rpm for Fedora and other RPM systems.
- AppImage if you want a single file that updates itself.
The choice matters because updates work differently. xAI's docs say package installs update through your package manager on your schedule. That is why they tell IT teams to prefer the .deb and .rpm packages for managed fleets, installed with tools like Ansible, Puppet or Chef.
Sign-in is the same as every other platform. Grok Bot uses your Cursor account, and there is no separate Grok Bot login. If your company uses single sign-on, you go through the normal company flow.

How Grok Bot Linux updates work
This is the biggest Linux difference. Here is how each install updates, per xAI's deployment and settings docs.
| Linux install | How updates arrive | Automatic Updates switch |
|---|---|---|
| .deb | Signed apt repository added at install; new versions come with package upgrades | Not shown |
| .rpm | Signed yum repository added at install; new versions come with package upgrades | Not shown |
| AppImage | The app checks, offers the update, and Restart to Update installs it | Shown, on by default |
| Cloud computer (Linux) | Maintained by xAI; idle computers move to new images in the background | Update Bot's Computer in Settings |
Installing the .deb adds a signed apt source at /etc/apt/sources.list.d/grok-bot.sources. The .rpm adds a signed repository at /etc/yum.repos.d/grok-bot.repo. After that, Grok Bot updates whenever you run package upgrades.
The update commands in xAI's troubleshooting guide are:
- Debian or Ubuntu: sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade grok-bot
- Fedora or other RPM systems: sudo dnf upgrade --refresh grok-bot
Want to control timing? Hold the package with apt-mark hold grok-bot, or switch the repository off and ship tested packages yourself. One warning from the docs: old builds stop working. When a build loses support, the app covers its window with Update required, and a held package still gets that screen. On Linux that screen shows the command to run with a Copy command button.

Grok Bot Linux fixes in the changelog
The official changelog at x.ai/changelog/bot has a string of Linux-specific lines. The useful ones:
- v0.20.0 (14 Aug 2026): press or hold Cmd+D, or Ctrl+D on Windows and Linux, to dictate into the message field.
- v0.31.0 (1 Sep 2026): on Linux, links that open Grok Bot launch the app.
- v0.45.0 (8 Sep 2026): deb and rpm installs show when an update is available and tell you to update through your package manager.
- v0.70.2 (11 Oct 2026): on Linux, the app stays responsive and can quit while a notification is showing.
- v0.71.2 (14 Oct 2026): Update required links the latest package, and opening Grok Bot while it is still quitting reopens it after the quit.
- v0.71.2: text copied from a chat pastes into other apps with non-English characters and curly quotes intact.
- v0.77.0 (26 Oct 2026): on Windows and Linux, the Bot notices an installed 1Password app and can offer to connect it.
Keyboard shortcuts follow the same rule across the app. xAI's docs say to use Ctrl on Windows and Linux wherever the Mac uses Cmd. So Ctrl+K opens the search palette, Ctrl+N makes a new Bot, and Ctrl+D starts dictation while the prompt is focused.
Grok Bot Linux settings that behave differently
A few settings default differently on Linux, according to xAI's settings and security docs:
- Hardware acceleration is on by default on macOS and Windows and off on Linux. Turn it on in Settings if you want the graphics card to draw the app.
- Notifications are always suppressed on Linux while Grok Bot is focused, and your phone is notified as usual.
- Hardware security keys such as a YubiKey can be used from a Mac or Windows desktop. xAI says this is not yet supported on Linux.
- Automatic Updates does not appear on .deb and .rpm installs, because the package manager handles it.

The Grok Bot Linux cloud computer
Now the second meaning. xAI's docs describe a persistent cloud computer with a browser, a command line and a filesystem. Every Bot on your account shares it. Work keeps going while your laptop is closed.
What that means in practice:
- One computer for all your Bots. Browser sessions, files and command-line credentials are shared across your Bots. Each Bot gets its own screen, so several can work in parallel.
- A shared folder. Durable project files go in /workspace.
- Strict isolation between users. xAI's security FAQ says each user gets a dedicated Firecracker microVM with its own kernel, memory and virtual devices.
- Not your device. The deployment guide says the hosted computer is not enrolled in MDM. Your device management tool reaches the desktop app and stops there.
You manage it from Settings, then Computer, under Bot's computer. Update moves it to the latest version. Recover and Reset rebuild it from saved data. Bots, files and logins come back. Apps and packages you installed yourself do not, so plan to reinstall them after a computer update.
For teams on Enterprise, Team Setup Scripts install tooling on every member's computer. xAI's private networks guide says a networking client must run on Debian-based Linux and install from a shell script. The identity guide adds that Okta FastPass does not run on Linux, so admins add a Linux-scoped sign-in rule for apps the Bot opens in its browser.
For a closer look at what Bots do on that machine, read Grok Bot computer use. To see how the Bot's browser handles sign-ins on that same Linux computer, read Grok Bot browser.
Grok Bot Linux vs Mac and other setups
The Bots are the same everywhere. Your Bots, chats and routines belong to your account, so you can move between a Linux desktop, a Mac and your phone. The Linux app differs in packaging, updates and a few defaults. If you also work on a Mac, see Grok Bot on Mac. Running a team? Read Grok Bot for teams.

Grok Bot Linux FAQ
Does Grok Bot have a Linux app?
Yes. xAI's docs list a Linux desktop app for x64 and Arm64, as .deb, .rpm or AppImage. It checks for updates on its own unless you use a .deb or .rpm, which update through your package manager.
How do I update Grok Bot on Ubuntu or Fedora?
On Ubuntu or Debian, run sudo apt update and then sudo apt install --only-upgrade grok-bot. On Fedora, run sudo dnf upgrade --refresh grok-bot. Then restart Grok Bot.
Do Grok Bots run on Linux even if I use a Mac?
Yes. xAI's deployment guide says the hosted computer every member's Bots use runs Linux in the cloud. The desktop app on your Mac, Windows or Linux machine is the client you chat and approve from.
Can I install my own packages on the Linux cloud computer?
You can, but xAI's docs say a computer update, Recover or Reset removes apps and packages you installed yourself. Keep durable files in /workspace and reinstall packages after a rebuild.
